Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre is the largest city in southern Brazil, and the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The city was founded in 1742 and with a population of over 1 million modern and historic blend in this large Metropolitan Center. Porto Alegre translates to Joyous Port. As it is located at the junction of 5 rivers and founded on the Guaiba River Porto Alegre has become an important commercial and Industrial port for Brazil. Crops for export include Leather, Canned Beef ,Rice and Soybeans. Known as the land of the Gauchos, and churrasco.

Porto Alegre was founded when immigrants from the Azores Portugal migrated To the Southern part of Brazil. The German Polish and Italian settlers started arriving in the 19th Century The City began a modern growth period with beautiful business and government buildings.

Porto Alegre preserved the charm of the old narrow cobbled streets and the Colonial buildings.
