History
When drifters William Overton and lawyer Asa Lovejoy were canoeing down the Willamette River in 1843, they came across a beautiful area that we now know as Portland. When Overton didn't have the quarter that was required to file a claim on the land, he sold half of it to Lovejoy for the quarter. Soon, Overton wanted to move on and he sold his half of the land to Francis Pettygrove. In 1845, after the two had cleared many of the trees and built a few roads and buildings, they flipped a coin to see who would name the city. Pettygrove won and since he was from Portland, Maine he wanted to name it after his home town.
