Popcorn Nutrition

Popcorn is a very good source of fiber, but its other nutrient properties are affected by how it is popped. The most nutritious way to pop corn is with an air popper, and then served plain or with very little toppings. Popping corn in the microwave or on the stove in oil leads to tastier popcorn, but it is also fattier, saltier and less nutritious.

Popcorn Toppings

Popcorn lends itself to variations. It can be served with almost anything sprinkled on it.

  1. Butter
  2. Salt
  3. Cinnamon sugar
  4. Parmesan cheese

  7. Chocolate chips

Sweet Popcorn Ball Recipe

You can make popcorn many different ways. Below is a recipe for sweet popcorn balls that requires standard non-flavored popcorn, butter, marshmallows, and a handful of other ingredients. Not counting cooling time, the recipe can take about 15-20 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 3 quarts plain popped corn (about 1/3 cup kernels)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 10 oz. bag marshmallows
  • Food coloring (optional)

Directions:

  1. Put popped corn in a large bowl. Set aside.
  2. Melt the butter and marshmallows in a stovetop pot, stirring constantly. When they are melted, take off the heat and allow the mixture to cool until it can be touched. If you like, stir in a few drops of food coloring.
  3. Using a wooden spoon, gently stir the melted mixture into the popcorn.
  4. Next, butter your hands and work quickly to form popcorn balls. Place balls on waxed paper to cool.
  5. After the balls are cool, use warm corn syrup to stick gum drops or other candy decorations to the popcorn balls (optional). The popcorn balls may be stored in sandwich bags.

This makes enough for about 15 two-inch balls, but they can be made into any size.
