    • Popular toppings: butter and salt
    • Invented by American Indians

    • Most popping corn is grown in Nebraska, Indiana and Texas
    • Unpopped kernels called "Old Maids"
  • The scent of freshly popped corn is unmistakable, and, for most of us, mouthwatering. Long ago Native Americans discovered that dried kernels of corn which are heated up will explode into a fluffy edible snack. Not all varieties of corn will produce kernels that pop satisfactorily. Americans have long been fans of popcorn, especially for eating at entertainment and sporting events.

Popcorn is a very good source of fiber, but its other nutrient properties are affected by how it is popped. The most nutritious way to pop corn is with an air popper, and then served plain or with very little toppings. Popping corn in the microwave or on the stove in oil leads to tastier popcorn, but it is also fattier, saltier and less nutritious.
