GM announced on September 16, 2009, that it would enhance the Canadian government's "Retire Your Ride" initiative by offering up to $3,000 for Canadian clunkers, thus echoing the popular Cash for Clunkers program in the U.S.[2] For more information, see General Motors Canada Cash for Clunkers.

  • History

Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works (of Pontiac, Michigan) was formed in 1900. In 1908, the company merged its operations with that of the Oakland Motor Company (of Oakland County, Michigan) to become the Oakland Motor Car Company and to produce the Cartercar. General Motors (GM) purchased Oakland in 1909. In 1927, GM produced the Pontiac Chief, a six-cylinder model. As Pontiac's sales rose, and Oakland's sales declined, Oakland ended production in 1932. After a century of production, amid increasing financial troubles, GM has a elected to phase out the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010.[1]
