Polygamist Mothers Speak Out

Categories: News | Social Issues
  • On April 16, 2008 three of the mothers from the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado, Texas appeared on Good Morning America and Today speaking out against the state officials who took their children away. The women were identified as Rachel, Rebecca and Monica but no last names were given.

On Today Meredith Vieira asked the women several questions about the reports of abuse. They were denied.

On April 4, 2008 the ranch was raided by the Texas Department of Child Protective Services who were escorted by state troopers. Allegations of abuse were reported by a 16-year-old girl who phoned authorities. Her identity still is a mystery. In all, over 400 children were removed from the compound along with 133 women.

The ranch follows the doctrine of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The FLDS sect is led by Warren Jeffs. Jeffs was sentenced to five years to life in prison in November, 2007.

Thus far the only mothers allowed to stay with their children are the ones that have young children.
