Twinleaf Town
- You begin the game here - select a gender and name for your character, and the name of your rival. If you don't want to use a custom name for either character, you can pick one of the generated names from the list. Once you name them, the names can not be changed.
- After you finish naming them, you'll start on the second floor of your house in your room. Move, and your rival will appear for a bit, then run off. Follow him downstairs.
- Your mother will tell you that your rival was looking for you. Head outside to Twinleaf Town.
- Head to your rival's house - it's the one in the top left corner of the four buildings. Talk to him again, then enter his house and head upstairs to his room.
- Try to talk to him again in his room, and your rival will run off again - he's very energetic. Head back downstairs and exit the house, then walk north to the beginning of Route 201.
- Talk to your rival, and Professor Rowan will appear. After talking to him for a bit, he'll ask some questions - pick the top option for each. His assistant Dawn will then show up with a briefcase, and you'll be able to select one of three starting Pokemon - Piplup, Chimchar, and Turtwig.
- NOTE: Your rival also gets a Pokemon, and he'll select the one that yours is weak against. If you choose Chimchar, he'll get Piplup; if you choose Turtwig, he'll get Chimchar. All it really means is that you'll need to grind for levels before you face him throughout the game.
- If you are unsure which Pokemon to choose, select Chimchar - it's the most effective against the Gyms. You aren't limited to using only Chimchar against the Gyms, however; you can use any Pokemon you catch. However, it's better to have one that is more effective starting off.
- After you select your Pokemon and Professor Rowan and Dawn leave, your rival will ask if you want to battle. Agree for your first boss fight.
-
BOSS FIGHT: Rival
- Your rival will use a level 5 Pokemon that is effective against your Pokemon. If you chose Chimchar, he uses Piplup; if you chose Turtwig, he uses Chimchar; and if you chose Piplup, he uses Turtwig.
- The bad news is that you are both using level 5 Pokemon, and his Pokemon is effective against you. He tends to use the non-damaging attacks, so just keep using your main damaging attack, like Tackle.
- You don't have to win this fight - no matter what the outcome, you'll find yourself back at your home.
- Talk to your mother to obtain the Running Shoes - by holding down B, you can move faster. When you are prepared, head back to Route 201.

Route 201
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Starly
- Bidoof
- Kriketot
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- Nidoran Male - Radar
- Nidoran Female - Radar
- Doduo - Swarm
- Growlithe - FireRed
- NOTE: Each area with tall grass will have information like that listed above about encountered Pokemon. The "Pokemon Encountered" are the normal Pokemon you can run into, while the "National Dex Pokemon Encountered" are the special situations you can use after obtaining the National Dex. For example, using the PKMN Radar after obtaining the National Dex gives you a chance to encounter a Nidoran Male.
- After the fight with your rival, he'll ask you to go to Lake Verity. Head west and up to find the lake. You'll see a man with blue hair who mumbles to himself, then leaves. You'll then hear the cry of the Legendary Pokemon, Mespirit.
- Your rival runs off, leaving you alone again. Head back to Route 201, and work your way east to find Sandgem Town. Be sure to grind for some levels, and try to get to level 10 at least before leaving this area.
Sandgem Town
- Once you enter Sandgem Town, Dawn will escort you to Professor Rowan's lab, where you'll obtain the Pokedex". Leave the lab, and Rowan will hurry after you to give you the TM27(Return). Dawn then offers to show you around town.
- Once the tour is complete, head to the Pokemart. They have the following items:
Sandgem Pokemart
- Poke Ball: 200
- Potion: 300
- Antidote: 100
- Paralyze Heal: 200
- Stock up on some Poke Balls and Potions, and head to the Pokemon Center(PC) to heal your Pokemon. You need to head back to Twinleaf Town to talk to your mother - catch some Pokemon on the way home, and when you speak to her you'll receive a Journal.
- Your rival's mother also appears, and gives you a Parcel to give to him. Once you've collected these items, head back to Sandgem Town and head north to Route 202.
Route 202
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Bidoof
- Shinx
- Starly
- Kricketot
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- Zigzagoon - Swarm
- Sentret - Radar
- Growlithe - FireRed
- Seedot - Ruby
- Lotad - Sapphire
- As soon as you enter Route 202, Dawn appears to show you how to catch Pokemon and gives you 5 Poke Balls. Try to catch a Starly and Shinx at the least, as they are good Pokemon for fighting the Gyms.
- You'll encounter a few Trainers as you progress - nothing to worry about, especially if you've been grinding for levels. Most of the Trainers are between level 2 and level 5, so you ought to have an easy time with them.
- There's a Potion in the grass near the entrance to Jublife City - be sure to grab it as you head in.
Jublife City
- Jublife City is interesting - as soon as you enter, Dawn will stop in and chat with you, introducing you to an undercover officer named "Looker". After you talk to him, he'll give you the Key Item Battle Recorder.
- Stop by the Pokemart and restock if you need to - you ought to have some cash from beating those Trainers on the way here.
Jublife Pokemart
- Poke Ball: 200
- Heal Ball: 300
- Potion: 300
- Antidote: 100
- Paralyze Heal: 200
- Air Mail: 50
- NOTE: The new Poke Ball type, the Heal Ball, automatically heals Pokemon you capture in the wild, which is great later on when you start catching level 20+ Pokemon. For now, though, don't bother - regular Poke Balls and Potions should be the priority.
- After you get stocked and visit the PC to heal your Pokemon, head to the Trainer's School to the left of where you met Looker.
Trainer's School
- Your rival is here - talk to him to give him the Parcel, and he'll give you a Town Map. You can use it to easily reference where you are, which comes in handy when dealing with Swarms after you get the National Dex.
- There are also two Trainers worth fighting here - School Kid Harrison and School Kid Christine. Both are worth 120p for defeating. The big difference is that these two are the first to use items during a match - Harrison uses an X Speed to increase his Starly's attack, and Christine likes to use a Potion for her Bidoof when its health drops low enough.
- After you defeat School Kid Harrison, talk to him to receive a Potion, and grab the X Attack from the upper left-hand corner before leaving.
Obtaining the Poketch
- Once you're back outside, talk to the man in the street between the PC and the Trainer's School - he'll tell you to find three clowns and answer their questions. A clown is located in front of the Pokemart, the Jublife TV Station, and the Poketech Company.
- Answer "yes" to the questions the clowns give you to receive Poketech Coupons. Once you have three, talk to the man again to receive the Poketch - it has a Pedometer, a status screen of your Pokemon, a calculator, and the like. It can be upgraded later with more advanced apps, as well.
- Head down Route 218(left of Jublife City) and talk to the fisherman in the gatehouse to receive an Old Rod. You can use this near a large body of water to catch a Magikarp(battle still applies, however). It's a good idea to go ahead and get a Magikarp, as they evolve into Gyarados at level 20.
- Now that you're stocked and ready, head to Route 203.
Route 203
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Bidoof
- Starly
- Kriketot
- Shinx
- Abra
- Zubat
- Fishing/Surfing Pokemon Encountered:
- Goldeen - Good Rod
- Magikarp - Good Rod
- Gyarados - Super Rod
- Seaking - Super Rod
- Psyduck - Surf
- Golduck - Surf
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- Seedot - Ruby
- Lotad - Sapphire
- Pineco - Emerald
- Cubone - Swarm
- As soon as you enter Route 203, your rival will challenge you again. You'll want to be at least level 10 with all of the Pokemon in your party, so if you're not, go grind for levels on some of the earlier Routes.
- NOTE: If you want to train a low-level Pokemon without actually fighting it, put it at the front of the party. When you encounter a wild Pokemon, immediately switch out for a high-level Pokemon - when you defeat the wild Pokemon, your low-level will still get half of the total EXP from the battle.
BOSS FIGHT: Rival II
- Your rival will be using the starter Pokemon(the one that's effective against what you chose) at level 9, and a Starly at level 7. Hopefully you've been fighting as often as possible, and have a Shinx in your party - if not, you can still win, but it's far more difficult.
- If you have a Starly of your own, have it at level 9 or higher before entering this fight - the Wing Attack it learns at level 9 can decimate your rival. Shinx also has some powerful attacks that are worth using. To be honest, there's no reason why you shouldn't be level 15 with at least two Pokemon, so this fight should be relatively easy.
- Unlike the first time you fought your rival, you do need to win this one to continue. Once you beat him, continue east to Oreburgh Gate. If you can, try to catch an Abra along the way, and pick up a Shinx if you don't already have one.
Oreburgh Gate
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Zubat
- Psyduck
- Geodude
- Fishing/Surfing Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- Talk to the Hiker as you enter to receive the HM06(Rock Smash), which you can't use until you obtain the first Gym badge.
- Catch a Zubat and Geodude at the very least - you have a 50% chance of encountering a wild Zubat and a 15% chance of encountering a wild Geodude. Their final evolutions - Crobat and Golem respectively - are great for many situations, but you will have to trade Geodude after it evolves into a Graveler in order to get Golem.
- Psyduck will be very helpful in just a bit during your Gym battle - get one and level it to level 15 as quickly as possible. It learns Water Gun at level 9, which will be a big help to you against the Gym leader, who uses Rock and Ground type Pokemon.
- Defeat the trainers you encounter and work your way east until you find the cave's exit to Oreburgh City.
Oreburgh City
- Your rival is at the Gym, and will explain to you that the Gym leader, Roark, isn't there. Ignore the museum for now - it isn't useful until you have some fossils from the Underground.
- Check the second condo as you enter the city to find a woman who will trade you an Abra for a Machop - when you finally do get a Machop, if you still haven't caught an Abra, come back and trade for hers. It can't learn any moves until it evolves into Kadabra at level 16, but you can still teach it HMs and TMs before then.
- Check the Pokemart to restock your inventory while you're here - be sure to grab several Potions for the upcoming Gym battle.
Oreburgh Pokemart
- Poke Ball: 200
- Potion: 300
- Antidote: 100
- Paralyze Heal: 200
- Heal Ball: 300
- Net Ball: 1000
- Tunnel Mail: 50
- NOTE: The Net Ball is great for catching wild Bug and Water type Pokemon - you may want to grab a few for catching a Beautifly in the Eterna Forest a little bit later.
- Be sure to check out the PC while you're here - the downstairs is now open, which lets you battle and trade with others online. When you finish in the city, head south to find the Oreburgh Mine.
Oreburgh Mine
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Zubat
- Geodude
- Onix
- Fishing/Surfing Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- Catch an Onix if you get the chance, and keep heading south until you reach the furthest southern area, where you'll find Roark. He's by two destructible rocks(the cracked ones) - talk to him and he'll return to the Gym.
- It's highly suggested that you stay here and grind for levels until every Pokemon in your Party is level 15 or higher - Roark uses a level 14 Cranidos, so be sure to have a level 15+ Geodude and Psyduck in your party, as they both learn moves that are good against Rock types.
- When you're ready, head back to the city and enter the Oreburgh Gym.
Oreburgh Gym
- You have an option here - you can either fight the two trainers on the way to Roark for EXP, or you can bypass them and fight Roark directly. To bypass them, head up the stairs on the left, across the bridge, and up the stairs on the right. Keep in mind that you can't fight the trainers after you defeat Roark.
- Be sure to heal your Pokemon at the PC before you take Roark on.
BOSS FIGHT: Roark
- Roark uses a Geodude and Onix, both at level 12, and a Cranidos at level 14.
- The best strategy is to have a level 15 Psyduck and a level 15 Geodude in your party. Psyduck learns Water Gun at level 9, which is great against Rock type Pokemon, and Geodude learns Magnitude at level 15, which is a Ground type attack that devastates Rock type Pokemon. Use these two Pokemon to bring the pain.
- When you defeat Roark, you'll receive the Coal Badge and TM76(Stealth Rock).
- You have the option of heading up Route 207 and catching a Machop, which is fairly common, to use in trade for an Abra. While you're there, you can also grab a Ponyta and Ralts, but when you finish, head back to the Oreburgh Gate.
Oreburgh Gate II
- Pokemon Encountered:
- Zubat
- Psyduck
- Geodude
- Fishing/Surfing Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- National Dex Pokemon Encountered:
- None
- NOTE: You'll need Rock Smash and a Pokemon that can use it(Geodude, for example) to continue to the next section.
- You can break the destructible rocks in the north of Oreburgh Gate now and enter the first half of the lower level there. You can't find Flash there like you could in Diamond/Pearl, but you can catch Psyduck on the first floor if you don't already have it.
- When you finish, head on to Jublife City.
