Point Range for Weight Watchers

    • POINTS system based on calories, total fat and total dietary fiber
    • Allows for flexible restraint
    • System designed to prevent overindulging
  • Weight Watchers' patented POINTS Food System is a way for members to track the food they eat without having to weigh or measure portions while on Weight Watchers' Momentum Plan. It is a rating of food portions based on calories, total fat and dietary fiber. The goal of the POINTS is to teach dieters how to eat healthier by making it easy to figure out and by educating them on a safe way to lose weight and keep it off.
  • Background

According to the first tier of Weight Watchers' "The Four Pillars: Food"http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=4&art_id=20751&sc=807, the POINTS system is formulated from the number of calories, the amount of total fat and the amount of dietary fiber in each specific portion of food. Each serving is assigned a small, easy-to-remember number which helps dieters stay within their personalized 'budget' of points for the day. The system is designed to guide dieters on how to make healthy food choices and inform them of why those choices will work.

The POINTS system teaches dieters to practice the skill of 'flexible restraint'. This skill is when a dieter puts a moderate level of control on what they eat without completely giving up all of the treats they love. This is where the Momentum Plan's weekly POINTS Allowance comes in to play. The POINTS Allowance allows for an allotment of treats that won't hinder the dieter's weight loss progression. This separate, weekly "budget" for indulgences helps build the dieter's ability to balance control and flexibility by encouraging dieters to reward themselves as they make progress without over-indulging.
