Plymouth, Massachusetts was once the home of the Wampanoag Native Americans called Patuxet. Samuel de Champlain, in 1605, sailed to Plymouth Harbor and called it Port St. Louis. In 1614, Captain John Smith explored parts of Cape Cod Bay and is credited with naming the region as "New Plimouth." Important to American Colonial history, Plymouth was the final landing site of the ship, the Mayflower.
Today much of that history still lives through reenactments, buildings and even ships that attract families and others to delve into America's days gone by. You can walk through a Native American village, walk the planks of the Mayflower II, visit a historical home or plantation, see the burial places of some of the first settlers to the area, take a walking tour of the historic district and much more.
