Plums

    • Fruit is a drupe, or stone fruit with smooth pit
    • Often made into jam or wine
    • Dried plums are called prunes
    • Prunes are high in antioxidants
    • Belong to Prunus species
    • Related to peach and nectarine
    • Over 2,000 varieties
    • Plums that are fresh and not over handled will have a white "bloom" layer on their skins
    • Can be refrigerated but should be eaten at room temperature
  • Plums ripen from May through October, and present a broad spectrum of colors, from translucent yellow, green and light red to fruits so dark purple they are almost black. Plums are high in Vitamin C, and while can be eaten out of hand, they also find themselves being made into jam or dried to made fiber rich prunes regularly.
