The PLO, or Palestinian Liberation Organization, is a multi-party confederation that, since its foundation in 1974, has been considered the "sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people," and the representative of Palestinians in the United Nations. Originally, the PLO was founded to "liberate the Palestinian homeland through armed struggle" and declared Israel an illegal entity. However, in 1993, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat recognized the sovereign state of Israel, after which Israel acknowledged the PLO as the official representative of the Palestinians. Recently, under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, the PLO has also adopted a policy supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict under the terms of the Division of Jerusalem and acknowledgment of the Palestinian Right of Return.
