Investigations were underway after a Minneapolis-bound Northwest Airlines plane overshot its destination by 150 miles before pilots turned around. According to reports, the pilots of Northwest Airlines Flight 188 were out of contact with air traffic controllers for more than an hour before realizing their mistake. Officials were said to be so concerned that the FAA considered scrambling military fighter jets to determine what was going on. The plane landed safely in Minneapolis on October 21, 2009.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125623517851801783.html
On October 26, 2009, reports said the two pilots were using personal laptop computers and "lost track of time and location." On October 27, 2009, the FAA revoked both pilots' licenses.http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/26/airliner.flyby/index.html http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,569867,00.html

Plane Misses Airport
Northwest Airlines Flight 188 missed its Minneapolis destination by 150 miles on October 21, 2009. The NTSB says pilots claim they were distracted by a conversation they were having. Passenger Amy Kieffer says she thought it was odd that it was time to land and the plane wasn't descending. The plane landed safely more than an hour late.
judbie46 added a comment October 25, 2009 06:40 PM| ReportJust where were the stewardesses while the plane soared well beyond Minneapolis? They certainly knew the time the plane was scheduled to land! Perhaps they were in the cockpit, also not paying any attention. It is a sad situation to be sure, and certainly won't help this airline increase it's business.
robschertzer added a comment October 28, 2009 09:01 PM| ReportIt was actually a flight attendant knocking on the cabin door to ask the pilot if they were going to announce they were landing soon that made the pilot aware that they had not been paying attention. The pilot and co-pilot did not respond. -
