Pittsburgh has a wide variety of attractions as well as many different types of tours. The city has everything from historical tours to tours of wineries. For the more independent type, there are driving tours available that will take you through Pittsburgh along with the rest of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh is also home to Just Ducky Tours: the only tour in the city that takes place on land and water. This specific tour has been reported as being very educational, entertaining and scenic. The only complaints many have is that the guides have a tendency of talking a bit too fast and some of the information is missed. http://www.justduckytours.com/content.php?p=19
Background
Pittsburgh has quite an outstanding amount of Amish culture, as well as an extensive history that begins with the Native Americans and follows through the Civil War, to the production and fall of steel and the course of Pittsburgh growing into what it is today, thanks to exports and the "American dream". As of today, Pittsburgh has been ranked one of America's "Most Livable Cities", but not without good reason. The city has low living costs, good infrastructure for education and a well diversified economy. This is greatly assisted by the number of sporting events, concerts and tourist attractions that the city has to offer. Without these and other things to do within the city, Pittsburgh would not likely thrive as it does now.
