The franchise first joined the NFL in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They failed to reach the playoffs their first several seasons in the league. A name change in 1940 turned the team into the Steelers, yet they still finished near last place in the league the following three years. After manpower became limited during World War II, they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943. The "Steagles" played a single season in the NFL, finishing with a 5-4-1 regular season record.Championship Years
The Steelers made their post season debut in 1947, falling to the Eagles in the first round. They played in their first Super Bowl in 1974 defeating the Minnesota Vikings for their first championship. They went on to win the Super Bowl again in 1975, 1978 and 1979. Their most recent championship came more than 20 years after their first dynasty, winning Super Bowl XL in 2005.Players and Alumni
