The Pittsburgh Pirates play in the Central Division of the Major League Baseball's National League. For a listing of teams and their divisions, see Major League Baseball Teams. The team formed in 1882 as the Alleghenys, named for Allegheny City, a neighbor of Pittsburgh. Five years later they were renamed the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. They Pirates played well all throughout the first decade of the 1900s lead by short stop Honus Wagner. They lost the first World Series to Boston but were able to win the championship in 1909. The Pirates also won titles in 1929, 1960, 1971 and 1979. Other notable Pirate players include Ralph Kiner, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Bill Mazeroski and Barry Bonds. More recently the Pirates have play poorly, their last winning season was in 1992 when they lost to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship.
