Pit Bull
The American Pit Bull Terrier breed also called the Pit Bull has had a rocky road set before them. Because of an image given to this animal by owners who train them to fight other dogs and attack humans the Pit Bull has been depicted as nothing more than an aggressive maniacal attack animal, yet nothing could be farther form the truth. They do have a natural aggressiveness http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm towards other dogs but this can be controlled by proper training and an understanding of their canine heritage. The dogs that have been depicted as attacking any human and causing death and destruction have been trained that way by their human masters. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/amerpit.html There was a time when the American Pit Bull Terrier did not have the reputation it does today. Many of us have a found memory of a dog that ran around with a group of kids on a popular television and movie series called “Our Gang” or “The Little Rascals”. That dog was Petey whose real name was Lucenay’s Peter and was registered with the United Kingdom Kennel Club as an American Pit Bull Terrier. Petey was also registered with the American Kennel Club as a Staffordshire Terrier. At that time the dogs were brought to America as great family and farm dogs and were considered to be loyal and trustworthy. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/amerpit.html What has happened is that although serious breeders and aficionados continue to hold the breed in high regard to train them properly there are those who would breed and train the dogs for fighting and also train them to be vicious attack dogs. This is not really the breeds nature but in earlier days in England the dogs were trained for bull baiting which is really just another form of bull fighting with dogs instead of humans. Another cause for misinformation is people who get a dog of this breed and fail to do the research into what must be done to insure that the dog is cared for and trained properly. If just a few simple guidelines are followed the APBT can make a wonderful and loyal member of the family. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/amerpit.html
