The American pit bull terrier is one of several breeds loosely classified as pit bulls. Although illegal in many countries, states and localities, American pit bull terriers are often used in dog fighting. The breed was originally imported to the United States in the 1800s from England and Ireland with fighting as the main intention.
Health Problems
Pit bull terriers require plenty of exercise to burn their off excessive energy. Some have joint problems, with hips and elbows.
Sports or Activities
Pit bull terriers are both strong and intelligent and can be used for service or compete in agility competitions. They have the ability to pull many times their body weight. A pit bull terrier was the first dog to become a "superdog" by winning the United Kennel Club championship. The breed is generally considered aggressive by nature and requires proper discipline. Many state and local governments require pit bull terriers to be muzzled in public places.
