The breed was originally imported to the United States in the 1800s from England and Ireland with fighting as the main intention.

A pit bull terrier was the first dog to become a "superdog" by winning the United Kennel Club championship. The breed is generally considered aggressive by nature and requires proper discipline. Many state and local governments require pit bull terriers to be muzzled in public places.
