Pies

Categories: Food | Cooking & Recipes | Dessert
  • Though traditionally thought of as desserts in the United States, pies can have nearly any edible filling and be served at any time of day. The only restrictions are a baked pastry shell that must partially surround the filling.
  • Origin and Practices

The modern pie originated in England, where meat and other savory pies are as common as the sweet variety. Some common meat pies include steak and kidney and minced beef.

In modern American kitchens, chicken pot pie is a common entree, though the chicken can be replaced with beef, turkey or even lamb. It has become so common that pot pies are even served frozen and can be heated in the microwave.

  • Dessert Pies

According to a Crisco survey, apple pie is the most popular dessert pie in America, followed by pumpkin. Sweet pies can also be made with blackberries, blueberries, pecans and cherries. Custard and cream pies are also common in American cuisine. Banana cream pie is made with bananas, custard, vanilla extract or chocolate.
