Picnic baskets are considered essential for smaller picnics. The picnic basket was originally a very simple design. They were typically made out of wood and were merely a box with a hinged lid. Modern picnic baskets can be made much larger and more elaborate. Some are insulated like a cooler to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Additional compartments are also common today in order to store additional items such as wine bottles, glasses, and other tableware. Blankets are also a popular addition to the picnic basket.
