The former mining town of Picher, Oklahoma was hit by a half-mile wide tornado on May 10, 2008.
At least six people were killed in Picher, another 150 were injured by flying debris. This is the deadliest tornado to hit Oklahoma since 1999.
The town was once a booming lead and zinc mining location but has since become an environmental disaster and a Superfund site due to the leftover waste from the mines.
Senator James Inhofe visited the area to assess damage and has asked FEMA and the National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) for assistance. FEMA officials are already on the scene.
The storm system associated with the Picher tornado included eight tornadoes, also hitting other parts of Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia.
