Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the fifth largest city in the United States.
-
History
It was founded in 1868 after being established by Civil War veteran Jack Swilling. The name "Phoenix" was derived from the fact that the previous Native American inhabitants of the area (the Hohokam) had long since abandoned it, and a new city was born in its place.Climate and Economy
The climate of Phoenix is hot and dry, with generally little rain and summer temperatures regularly reaching 100 degrees. Because it is the capital, the local economy is based largely on government employment; however, several large businesses also have their headquarters or large branches in the city (including PetSmart, Intel, American Express, and US Airways).Sports
Phoenix is home to teams in each of the four major sports: football (Arizona Cardinals), baseball (Arizona Diamondbacks), basketball (Phoenix Suns), and hockey (Phoenix Coyotes).Mahalo Suggests
