  • Career at Tennessee

    Phillip Fulmer joined the coaching staff at the University of Tennessee in 1980 as an assistant. In 1989, he was named the offensive coordinator. Fulmer spent 13 years as an assistant before being named head coach of the Volunteers in 1992. Early on, Fulmer's team won the Southeastern Conference championship in 1997 and 1998 before winning the national championship, also in 1998. Fulmer led the Vols to the SEC Championship game in 2001, 2004 and 2007. However, Tennessee lost all three games. Fulmer's team also appeared in three straight BCS or Bowl Alliance games in 1997, 1998, and 1999.     On November 3, 2008, Fulmer agreed to step down as head coach of Tennessee after getting off to a slow start. Fulmer will finish 2008, but will not return in 2009.
