Philip Seymour Hoffman is an Academy Award winning American actor.
Hoffman was nominated for a 2009 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a troubled priest in Doubt, but Heath Ledger was posthumously awarded the Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight. Life and Career
Philip Seymour Hoffman was born and raised in Rochester, New York. His mother was a family court lawyer and his father was a Xerox executive. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and checked himself into rehab soon after graduation for alcohol addiction.
His big break into Hollywood came with his supporting performance in Scent of a Woman. Since then he has been getting steady work as an actor and has worked with a wide array of top level directors such as The Coen Brothers, Spike Lee, Cameron Crowe, David Mamet, Anthony Minghella, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
Awards
In 2005, Hoffman played the title role in the film Capote and won a best actor Oscar for his work. He was also nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for his role in Charlie Wilson's War opposite Tom Hanks.
