Actor Philip Baker Hall has appeared in television and films since the mid-1970s, though it was not until the mid-'90s that Hall attracted an avid following. His appearances in the first three films of director Paul Thomas Anderson earned him a cult status as a character actor in his mid-60s.
Early Life and Career
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Hall served in the military and taught English at a local high school before choosing to become an actor in his 30s. He enjoyed moderate success on the New York stage before moving to Los Angeles in 1975 and having guest roles on television, including on M*A*S*H, Cagney & Lacey and T.J. Hooker.
Military Man
Hall is frequently cast as a government or military official. In the mid-1990s, he played the "Chief Justice" in The Rock and Attorney General Andrew Ward in Air Force One. He portrayed a government cabinet member again in 2002's The Sum of All Fears as Defense Secretary David Becker.
