Attractions
Philly is a haven for museums, theater and historic sites. The most well-known museum is the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which currently holds one of the worlds widest selection of art. Some of the more popular pieces they hold are works from Cezanne, Picasso and Van Gogh.If art isn't in your plans when visiting the city, then why not take in the historic era of Philadelphia. The Eastern State Penitentiary is said to be "one of America's most historic prisons." Guided tours are available, even at night when it can be the most spooky. Be sure to check out inmate records and the photography they offer. The Best Western Center City Hotel even provides a "bed, breakfast and prison package."
Another stop on your list of American history should be the Independence National Historic Park, home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the Constitution Hall. This is basically the site of American's first capital. Visiting the Liberty Bell is free of charge, while touring Independence Hall is based on "timed tickets." Constitution Hall is home of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.
The historic district of Philadelphia has so much to offer, and if time allows, it should be explored to the fullest. The very first banks of America are located here, as well as Congress Hall and Old City Hall. Benjamin Franklin home once stood on the very grounds of the Independence National Historic Park. There are about 20 historically bound buildings that are open for public access with in the park. The National Park Service has wonderful information on all of the Independence Park services and facilities.
