Philadelphia

  • A central city in the birth of American history and the United States' first capital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the nation's sixth most populous city. It is located in the south-eastern corner of Pennsylvania, with Camden, New Jersey to the east, just over the Delaware River.
  • Philly Food

Philadelphia is noted for its unique sandwiches and snack foods. The cheesesteak was invented there in the 1930s and remains the city's most iconic food, with world famous locations Pat's Steaks and Geno's Steaks across the street from each other at the corner of 9th and Passyunk in South Philadelphia. A similarly shaped sandwich, the hoagie, was invented in Philadelphia and was named the city's official sandwich in 1992.

Though not invented in Philadelphia, the city is considered the American home of the soft pretzel. Numerous street vendors sell the product as well as Italian ice.

  • City of Brotherly Love

Not just a nickname, "Philadelphia" literally means "Brotherly Love" in Greek. William Penn named the city in 1682.

Philadelphia is home to several historic sites of national importance, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Second Continental Congress met and the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Philadelphia Art Museum holds major works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. In front of the museum are the steps made famous by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky.
