Reports of Cruelty
A search of multiple consumer websites confirms the mistreatment of animals as far back as 2006, though an in-depth 8-month investigation performed by the Humane Society of the United States claimed that Petland stores across the nation had ties with puppy mills which were found to treat their puppies cruelly. The investigation, which was released in November 2008, included 21 of Petland's 140 national locations, and 35 breeding locations known to supply Petland with animals.According to the report by the HUSA, many of the dogs distributed in Petland stores are raised in mass-production puppy mills, where the pets are kept in dirty, cramped cages, many times in large groups and often confined with no social activity for much of their early lives. Some of the animals discovered were in need of immediate veterinary care.HSUS.org: Petland Linked to Puppy Mills (November 20, 2008)
Petland released a response to the HUSA report which said that Petland did "not support substandard breeding facilities" and assured their customers that they "provide each Petland store with “Humane Care Guidelines," noting that similar reports were released on the HUSA website every year around the holiday fund raising season.Petland.com: Petland responds to HSUS report
