Peter Jackson, the director of The Lord of the Rings Film Series, has announced he will executive produce a live film version of The Hobbit, which is the prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It was originally unclear as to whether Jackson would direct this film as well, but on April 24th, 2008 it was announced that Guillermo Del Toro would helm the project. It has also been announced that The Hobbit will be split into two feature films, which will be shot over the course of four years in New Zealand.
The Hobbit takes place 60 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins who joins forces with Gandalf and sets out to slay a dragon named Smaug.
