Peter Hoekstra is the house representative for the 2nd District of the state of Michigan. Serving in that capacity since 1993, Hoekstra emigrated from the Netherlands to Michigan at a young age. Before his career in politics, he was the vice president for the furniture manufacturer Herman Miller Corp.

As a member of the Education & Labor Committee and the subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, Peter Hoekstra has been a strong advocate for education reform in the district he represents. During his time in Congress, he has substantially increased the amount of state funding to schools in western Michigan. In 2008, he spearheaded the allocation of more than $60,000 for mentoring programs in the Zeeland Public Schools district.
