When choosing a collar it's important to consider the purpose of the collar. The traditional Buckle Collar is used as a restraining device and to hold identification tags. The BreakAway Collar serves the same purpose, but has a safety mechanism which prevents strangulation. These collars are popular for small animals or puppies or kittens who aren't strong enough or vocal enough to get one's attention in a dangerous situation. Stud Collars provide protection from other animals attacks. Since the neck area is a common and vulnerable point of attack by other animals the stud collar discourages animals to attack the area. Training Collars are used with dogs as a training aid. Correctly pulling and releasing the Slip Collar demands the animals attention and disciplines them accordingly. Variations on these different types of collars are available such as the Prong Collar and Shock Collars.
