Periodontitis

Categories: Health | Diseases | Dental
  • Periodontitis is caused by inflammation of a person's gums around their teeth. The majority of cases are mild but some patients suffer from more severe symptoms including loss of their teeth.
  • Symptoms

    1. Recurring swelling of the gums
    2. Recession and bleeding of gums
    3. Loosening of teeth
    4. Halitosis

  • Periodontitis or Gum Disease?

There is some confusion between periodontitis and gum disease; the two terms are often used interchangably. Periodontitis is one common form of gum disease that occurs when there is a bacterial infection in the gums. Although common, periodontitis can become a severe oral issue.

  • Prevention

Periodontitis can be prevented early on in life by practicing good oral hygiene. Frequent dental checkups are also important to prevent all forms of gum disease. If periodontitis is suspected there are many different options to stop the progression, including debridement of the plaque or tarter along the gums.
