  • Pere Ubu is an avant garde rock band. The band's style is unique—although often categorized as new wave, their music is influenced by blues and garage rock. Founded in 1975 from the ashes of the Stooges-like hard rock band Rocket from the Tombs, Pere Ubu were one of the first American bands to use synthesizers for purposes other than emulating real instruments. Some of their early recordings include unexpected eruptions of electronic noise. Another unusual element is singer David Thomas' strange, exaggerated vibrato. The band's most accessible releases are the pop-oriented Cloudland (1989) and Worlds in Collision (1991).
