  • American R&B and soul singer Percy Sledge is an artist whose first single, "When a Man Loves a Woman" was released in 1966 and brought Atlantic Records their first Gold Record. It is listed on Rolling Stone's list at number 54 of the greatest 500 songs of all time. Sledge was initiated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame in 2007.
  • Early Times

    Sledge began his career while working as an orderly at the Colbert County Hospital in Sheffield, Alabama touring with the Esquires Combo on the weekends. On the advice of DJ Quin Ivy, Sledge left the group to start a solo career, releasing "When A Man Loves A Woman" on an independent label before Atlantic Records signed him. Other chart topping hits for him included "Warm and Tender Love," "Take Time to Know Her" and "Cover Me."
