Early History
The People's Liberation Army was originally known as the Red Army, which was officially founded after the Nanchang Uprising. On August 1, 1927, Communist troops, under the command of He Long and Zhou Enlai, rebelled against former Kuomintang (KMT) allies. It was the first armed conflict between separate Communist and KMT armies, and marked the beginning of the Chinese Civil War.
