After the 9/11 attacks the entrance of the Metro to the Pentagon was redesigned to provide more protection. Previously, a single escalator connected the Metro platform to the Pentagon entrance. Previously commuters took a single escalator up to the entrance but now an elevator takes travelers to the outside and then they enter the Pentagon area through a stone area. Guards located behind bullet proof glass check IDs before individuals enter the building. The changes in design are believed to have made the shootings less dangerous to the bypassers.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/04/AR2010030405109.html?hpid=dynamiclead
