Pens are instruments used to apply ink to a medium, normally paper. Historically, reed pens, quill pens, and dip pens were used by dipping the tip in an ink well. Today, pens are sold with the ink built into a chamber. There are a large variety of pen types available, depending on the color, size and feel that is wanted.
History of Modern Pens
- Ballpoint pens were introduced in 1943. They use a small ball in the tip of the pen, which rotates as it is moved across paper, picking up and dropping ink that is stored in a chamber.
- Felt-tipped pens were introduced during the 1960's.
- Rollerball pens were introduced during the 1980's. They work much like a ballpoint pen, but produce a smoother line.
