Pennsylvania Primary Results 2008

-->
  • This page features the results from the 2008 Pennsylvania primary, held on April 22, 2008. Intense interest in the contest was generated by the extended primary fight between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
  • Democratic primary

    Clinton won Pennsylvania as expected, although questions remains about the significance of the victory. Once projected to win by 30 points, Clinton's final margin was 10%, at 55% of the vote to Obama's to 45%. The number of additional delegates Clinton will receive from the state (at least 80, as of April 23, as oppsed to at least 66 for Obama) will not reverse Obama's considerable mathematical lead going into the Indiana primary, and eventually the 2008 Democratic Convention. With Obama also holding a lead in the popular vote, the only remaining route to a Clinton nomination is to have the race decided by superdelegates. In her victory speech, Clinton pledged to remain in the race, proclaiming that Americans don't give up. Clinton predicted a turn in the tide.
  • Republican primary

    According to the Republicans' winner-take-all primary system, John McCain has already taken the GOP nomination. Libertarian candidate Ron Paul nonetheless picked up 16% of the vote in Pennsylvania, while Mike Huckabee, a favorite among evangelical voters, picked up 11%.
