The brunette, born in Madrid, Spain, started her successful acting career in Spanish speaking films, quickly establishing herself one of the bravest and alluring actresses working in the business with performances in films such as Jamon, Jamon with Javier Bardem, the Oscar nominated Belle epoque, and hit arthouse film Abre los ojos.

In 1998, she was cast in the high profile film The Hi-Lo Country starring Woody Harrelson and she soon became one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood. She followed up that success with the films All the Pretty Horses with Matt Damon, Blow with Johnny Depp, Captain Corelli's Mandolin with Nicolas Cage, and the English language remake of her hit film Abre los ojos titled Vanilla Sky starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

In 2006, she was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress in a motion picture for her critically acclaimed work on the film Volver. Her role as María Elena in the 2008 movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" won her many awards, including an Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actress", a BAFTA Award, a Santa Barbara International Film Festival Award, and several others.
