Pearl Harbor Day is not a federal holiday, meaning schools, government offices, businesses, and other organizations remain open on December 7. However, on direction from the President, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast at the White House and on all United States government buildings to honor those that died in the attacks. Additionally, special services are held to commemorate the event, including speeches made by people that were associated with Pearl Harbor, wreath-laying ceremonies, and school activities designed to teach students about the attack and its place in U.S. history.http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/pearl-harbor-remembrance-day
Pearl Harbor Day History
The attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941 on the American Army and Naval Base at Pear Harbor, Hawaii, and involved a surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack resulted in over 2,000 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries, and prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the United States to declare war on Japan on December 8, 1941, officially entering World War II. For several months following the attacks, the slogan "Remember Pearl Harbor" resonated throughout the U.S., and a song of the same name was played on radio stations nationwide.http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/pearl-harbor-remembrance-day
On the 50th anniversary of the attack, the U.S. Congress created the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal, to be given to any U.S. military veteran present in or around the attack. Although reunions including World War II and Pearl Harbor survivors have dwindled in recent years due to the increased age and ill health of veterans, memorial services are held annually on December 7 at places like the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/pearl-harbor-remembrance-day
