There is only a finite amount of oil in the world. "Peak oil" is defined as the point when worldwide oil production is at its highest. Once peak oil has passed, the amount of oil available will decline. Prices will go up, and eventually the resource will not be available at any price.

Peak Oil Controversy
Some scientists claim that peak oil has already happened, noting that many countries have already decreased their oil production. Others state that there are still several decades to go. Still others think researchers will find a way to recover oil from more difficult-to-reach areas, such as sand or much smaller oil fields, and thus peak oil will be staved off by hundreds of years. -
