  • PBS is the abbreviation for the Public Broadcasting Service. It is a private, nonprofit corporation, founded in 1969 that provides commercial-free content on television and the Internet. It is well known for distributing award-winning children's programming and adult educational programming.
  • Member Stations

Programming is produced not by PBS, but by other parties like local member stations, which are then distributed by PBS. Largely funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS also collects fees from member stations who want to air shows distributed by PBS. Other funding is provided by viewers of the shows, who donate money toward the operating cost of the member stations. Those member stations in turn use the money to pay the fees that PBS charges to carry its programming.
  • Children's Programming

In addition to classic children's programs like Sesame Street, 3-2-1 Contact and Reading Rainbow, which continue to draw audiences, newer shows like Arthur and Barney & Friends have been highly successful. Most shows for kids combine an educational approach with entertainment.
  • Adult Programming

For adults, PBS provides commercial-free programming in a variety of areas such as drama, science, history and the arts. They also offer news programming in the form of The News Hour with Jim Lehr and Frontline.
