• Academy Award-nominated American filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson's first film to garner widespread acclaim was his ambitious take on the porn industry, 1997's Boogie Nights. The film starred a large ensemble cast, which has become one of Anderson's trademarks. Magnolia followed two years later and again starred a large cast including Tom Cruise and Boogie Nights' Julianne Moore. Anderson received writing Oscar nominations for both films, and in 2008 was thrice-nominated for There Will Be Blood.
