On January 14, 2009, Paul Byrd announced that he was sitting out the first half of the 2009 season in order to rest and spend time with his family. Byrd plans to hopefully sign with a playoff contending team after the all-star break. Byrd has pitched in 13 seasons in Major League Baseball. He was 38 at the time of the announcement. Paul Gregory Byrd was born on December 3, 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended college at Louisiana State University. In 1991, he was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. On July 28, 1995, Byrd made his Major League Baseball debut with the New York Mets. Byrd has played for several teams throughout his career, including the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Cleveland Indians.
