Patrick Fitzgerald is the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. He was nominated for the position on September 1, 2001. It was made official on October 24 of that same year.

In December 2008, Fitzgerald announced the arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich on corruption charges. On December 31, 2008, Patrick Fitzgerald filed a motion seeking additional time for the return of the indictment against Governor Blagojevich.
