Paths of Glory is a war drama written by Calder Willingham and Stanley Kubrick and directed by Kubrick. It is based on the novel Paths of Glory by Humphrey Cobb and was released on October 25, 1957. The movie stars Adolphe Menjou as General George Broulard, in charge of French troops in World War I. Kirk Douglas plays Colonel Dax and George Macready plays General Paul Mireau, who leads the charge in attacking Ant Hil, with devastating results. Paths of Glory was first considered a failure but now earns rave reviews as a war movie classic.
Plot Synopsis
Paths of Glory is a war film set during the third year of World War I. It stars Adolphe Menjou as a French General who orders his men to attack Ant Hill, occupied by the Germans. General Mireau and Colonel Dax, played by George Macready and Kirk Douglas respectively, lead the attack, with disastrous results. Mireau orders the execution of three of his men to set an example to the rest of the troops. Dax defends them, to no avail. Adolphe Menjou, Ralph Meeker and Wayne Morris co-star.
