The Party of Democratic Revolution (PRD) is the leading opposition party in Mexico, after President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party. PRD was established in 1989 as a conglomeration of numerous left-wing parties, and has maintained a liberal political stance since then. It has been vocal about its opposition towards Calderon's administration, and has disputed the results of his 2006 election.

PRD's internal organization is also embroiled in disputed election results. Alejandro Encinas, Obrador's protege, claims to have beaten Jesús Ortega in the party's 2008 elections.
