The distinctive "groove-metal" music of Texan heavy metal band Pantera was brutally heavy but often ultra-melodic as well, even with frontman Phil Anselmo's trademark scream. This stylistic blend made the band an MTV favorite and resulted in successful albums such as Far Beyond Driven, which was one of the first metal albums to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

No Hope for a Reunion
Tensions between Anselmo and the alliance of brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) eventually led to the band bitterly breaking up in 2003. Fans' hopes for an eventual reunion were dashed the next year when Darrell was shot and killed onstage in Columbus, Ohio, while performing with his band with Paul, Damageplan. -
