  • Pan's Labyrinth is a 2006 Academy Award-winning fantasy film from director Guillermo del Toro. Set shortly after the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, the film tells of a young girl named Ofelia who is living with her mother and cruel stepfather, a captain in the army of Francisco Franco. She becomes friends with a kitchen maid who supports rebel insurgents, but all the while is involved in her own struggle. Ofelia must complete three tasks to prove to a faun that appears only to her that she is the true princess of a dark and mysterious kingdom.
  • Critical and Public Reception

Pan's Labyrinth was met with glowing reviews from many well-regarded critics and critical institutions, notably Roger Ebert, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic, among others. Despite this, many moviegoers were shocked by the juxtaposition of lush and beautiful fantasy images and starkly real images of violence. Nonetheless, the film was generally well-received, getting a standing at its first screening in North America at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival.
