A Panino is an Italian sandwich using a small loaf of bread, typically ciabatta or foccacia, that is sliced horizontally and filled with cheese such as fontina or provolone, cured meats such as salami or ham, and various vegetables.
The sandwiches can be served hot or cold, but in the United States, panini are usually buttered and then grilled in a Panini Press.
One sandwich is called a Panino, while multiple sandwiches are called Panini.
